Student Externs

Come join the oldest family-owned private veterinary hospital group in America! Callanan Veterinary Group (CVG) was founded in Brighton, MA in 1926. Our practice group includes five hospitals in the metropolitan Boston area and one hospital in Warwick, RI.

CVG offers 2- to 4-week externship programs for current third- and fourth-year veterinary students who are enrolled in their clinical rotations. During their time with CVG, externs will rotate through our busy clinics and work alongside senior clinicians as they collaborate to manage medical cases. Surgical mentorship is available for selected students. Our group of six hospitals and over twenty doctors means that our externs can learn a variety of successful approaches to common medical and surgical conditions.

There is an option for interested students to take a tour of the New England Aquarium and to connect with Animal Care staff about their work. Externs may also have the opportunity to train with board-certified imaging and surgical specialists (schedule permitting). Finally, we also offer the opportunity for interested students to participate in community-based medicine at our nonprofit facility, the Merwin Memorial Clinic in Allston, MA.

Our hospitals utilize digital tabletop and dental radiography, benchtop blood sample analyzers, sevoflurane gas anesthesia, vaccines/preventatives/supplements and other wellness products, full therapeutic pharmacy, prescription veterinary diets, and general surgical and dental instrumentation with high speed drill, ultrasonic piezoelectric scaler, and full anesthestic monitoring equipment. Specialty medicine is offered through traveling consultants or via referral to a local advanced care facility.

Callanan Veterinary Group’s hospitals strive to provide our clients and patients with progressive, high quality, evidence-based medicine while fostering a collaborative, positive work environment for doctors and support staff. We offer a full range of general medicine services, from wellness/preventive care, to general surgery and dentistry, to urgent/sick visits, to end-of-life care, all delivered in a warm, trusted, family-owned setting. Traveling specialists visit our clinics to perform advanced imaging and surgeries. Successful applicants will have a positive attitude, a strong desire to learn, and excellent communication skills.
