Four generations of Callanans have cared for the pets of Boston and Rhode Island. Today that's five full-service hospitals, plus grooming, boarding and doggy daycare.

1926–2026
2026 marks 100 years of the Callanan Veterinary Group. Four generations of one family have cared for the animals of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the people who love them.

Every location is a full-service veterinary hospital. Call the one nearest you, or request an appointment online and we'll call you back, usually within one business day.
From routine wellness visits to sick and urgent visits, every one of our hospitals is fully equipped to diagnose, treat and care for your pet. Regular checkups are still the best way to keep your pet healthy and to catch problems early.

All five of our hospitals are fully equipped to quickly diagnose, treat and monitor your pet. From routine wellness visits to sick and urgent visits, our teams are here when your pet needs us. Regular checkups are still the best way to keep your pet healthy and happy, and to catch problems early.

For puppies, active breeds and dogs who get lonely. Secure indoor and outdoor play areas, fully supervised by handlers who love dogs, with treats, fresh water and plenty of TLC. On rainy, snowy or very cold days, the fun moves indoors.

Our groomers are up close with your pet, which often catches irritations and budding health issues early. High-stress or difficult animals are no problem, and anesthetic grooming is available under a doctor's supervision.

Every guest gets attention, fresh water, premium food and exercise, however long the stay. Cats are housed separately for a calmer stay, and pets with medical needs can board with our medical team.
At Neponset Animal Hospital, Dorchester, MA
Grooming, doggy daycare and boarding at Neponset Animal Hospital in Dorchester, with our veterinary team in the same building. Open 7 days, with off-street parking and a 2,500 sq ft outdoor play yard in the heart of the city.

Easy drop-off and pick-up with off-street parking on Morrissey Blvd. Serving Dorchester, Milton, Quincy and South Boston.

A fenced outdoor yard in the heart of the city, where dogs play in supervised groups with dogs their own size.

Cats stay in their own quarters, away from the dogs, for a calmer, cozier stay while you're away.

Pets with medical needs can board with our medical team, and help is steps away if anything comes up. Dr. Samson, reporting for duty.

Add-ons for boarding guests. Just ask at check-in.
Every stay includes: supervised group play in our 2,500 sq ft outdoor yard with dogs their own size, heated and air-conditioned kennels, 24-hour video and motion monitoring by our staff (there's no live camera feed for owners) and fresh water, premium food and plenty of attention.

At Rhode Island Animal Medical Center, Warwick, RI
Daycare and boarding at Rhode Island Animal Medical Center in Warwick, with a veterinary team right down the hall. Every guest gets supervised play, enrichment and plenty of attention, whether they're here for an afternoon or two weeks.

Cooling off, splashing and playtime all summer long.

A sandbox built for digging, included with every daycare day and boarding stay.

Not every dog loves a crowd. Dogs who prefer people get one-on-one enrichment and fetch with our staff instead of group play.

Cats board in their own quiet area, and we care for birds, reptiles, turtles, rabbits and other small pets too. Just bring their enclosure and supplies.

Summer 2026 menu, for daycare and boarding guests
Included with every visit: bubble parties every Wednesday and Friday, scent games for mental enrichment and the dig pit and splash pool.
Seasonal photo shoots for your pet, set up in our Warwick studio corner. Sign up at the front desk and pay when you sign up. Framed photos are ready for pickup Monday through Friday.
Offered through the year for Valentine's Day, Easter, Fall and Halloween.

“We are devoted to providing the highest level of medical care through a full spectrum of advanced and proven techniques with an emphasis on exceptional client services.”The Callanan Veterinary Group mission
The mission P.J. Callanan started at Toureen Boarding Kennels has been carried on by his sons, brothers, nephews, grandsons and cousins.
P.J. Callanan and Dr. Bourke found Toureen Boarding Kennels in Brighton, Massachusetts.

P.J.'s son Kevin Callanan, MRCVS, expands the family business with Brighton Animal Hospital.

P.J.'s brother Tommy and nephew Joe open Neponset Animal Hospital, just over the Quincy line in Dorchester.
The family expands into Somerville, headed by Dr. Kevin and Dave Ahearn. Today it's Somerville Veterinary Center.
Dr. Kevin's son Charles brings the family into Rhode Island with a 13,000 sq ft full-service facility.
Brighton Animal Hospital is fully renovated and renamed Massachusetts Animal Medical Center, headed by Dr. Kevin's sons Charles, Neil and John.

Union Square is completely renovated, adding orthopedic surgery and grooming. Neponset Animal Hospital gets an exterior facelift.
Our newest hospital opens in Medford, led by Dr. Jon Callanan.
The Callanan Veterinary Group celebrates its centennial: four generations of one family, five hospitals.
A Holy Cross graduate and former captain of its men's ice hockey team, Dr. Callanan played abroad for two years before joining the family practice. Like his father before him, he earned his MVB from University College Dublin, graduating in 2008. He lives in Waltham with his wife, two children and their dog, Dublin, and spends hockey season in rinks across Massachusetts coaching his kids.

The Kev Classic. The Kev Classic Memorial Golf Tournament remembers Kevin Callanan, son of Neil and Kim Callanan, who passed away in 2022 at age 13. Kev was never happier than on a golf course with his dad, family and friends, so each year the tournament brings them together to share memories and raise money for The Wolf School.
The Wolf School. Kevin attended The Wolf School in East Providence from 2018 to 2022, and his family found it transformative. Founded in 1999, Wolf teaches up to 60 children a year in grades K–8 from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, blending academics with therapeutic support throughout the school day.
