Patrick James “PJ” Callanan was granted his angel wings on February 29, 2008, following a lifelong illness. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that PJ had touched in some small way throughout his short, yet very memorable life.

PJ’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. His friendly smile could melt the hearts of those around him, his reverting blue eyes captivated your attention and at times left you breathless, and though he never spoke a word, his voice and thoughts could always be heard.

Although PJ’s illness made him appear frail, he possessed colossal strength and unwavering perseverance. With his courage he led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. He could spend hours rocking in his favorite chair while cuddling close to those he loved so much. He enjoyed music, sucking on his green pacifier, shaking his rattle, and reading stories. He loved making googly eyes at the cardinal and sunshine on his mobile.

With PJ’s passing we remind others that his life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss him everyday, especially his kind smile and raspy laugh. He will forever remain in our hearts. We never imagined how much he could teach us. It has been a privilege to be his parents. We are so very thankful.

PJ leaves behind many wonderful caregivers that provided love and support that enhanced his quality of life. PJ’s love extends to wonderful staff at Children’s Hospital Boston. There is a special place in our hearts for PJ’s best friend “Dr. Marx.” Not only is he PJ’s cardiologist but also a playmate who would come into PJ’s room and play with him everyday. All of these special people, too numerous to mention, provided PJ with love and dignity in his life and also in his death.

PJ is survived by his loving parents, Jon and Julie Callanan; paternal grandparents Kevin and Jane Callanan ; maternal grandparents James and Patricia Vander Ploeg , many Uncle and Aunts: Chad and Joyce Callanan , Ean and Julie Callanan, Neil and Kim Callanan, Brian and Monica Murphy, and Michael and Jessica Sidelecki and much loved cousins Emma and Jack Callanan, Aidan and Catherine Callanan, and Brian Murphy, Jr.
